ABOUT
Mark Metzgar grew up in New Mexico, the child of a hardworking single mother who taught him, by example, the meaning of perseverance, sacrifice, and fighting for what is right. Loss came early in Mark’s life. Before the age of eight, he had lost all four of his grandparents. Then, in high school, Mark suddenly lost his step-grandmother and stepfather. These losses served as a devastating reminder that tragedy can strike without warning, and that the people left behind deserve someone willing to fight for them.
A proud native New Mexican, Mark attended the University of New Mexico for his undergraduate studies, before earning his Juris Doctor from the University of New Mexico School of Law. His deep roots in this state are not merely biographical – they are the foundation of his commitment to the people of New Mexico, particularly those who have been overlooked, underserved, or silenced.
As an undergraduate, he served as a Fred R. Harris Congressional Intern in Washington, D.C., working in the office of United States Senator Martin Heinrich, and was a contributing author to a book on the global refugee crisis published by the University of New Mexico Press in 2017. He also wrote extensively on the politicization of the United States Supreme Court and studied First Amendment jurisprudence in the age of social media. This research was driven by a genuine belief that the law must adapt to protect ordinary people in an ever-changing world.
In law school, Mark continued to seek out experiences that would make him a more capable and compassionate advocate. He served as a Judicial Extern for the New Mexico Supreme Court under then-Chief Justice C. Shannon Bacon and spent two terms as a Research Assistant for Professor Veronica Gonzales, contributing to a national evaluation of how civil procedure is taught across the country.
Prior to joining CURTIS & CO., Mark was prepared for the complex work of the firm through his past experience in professional liability defense work. This experience gave him an intimate understanding of how corporations and insurance companies handle litigation.
For Mark, the practice of law is a calling rooted in where he comes from, how he was raised, the losses that shaped him, and an unwavering commitment to demonstrating empathy and excellence in his advocacy.
