The Causes of Hospital Acquired Infections

Whenever you seek out medical attention, you expect to be treated for an issue. However, there are instances where a hospital visit can lead to more complications.

One of the most common complications is contracting a Hospital Acquired Infection (HAI) during your visit. These are infections that a patient contracts during treatment, especially surgery. The consequences of infection can range from a delayed recovery to death.

Our firm achieved a $4.5 million Verdict against a New Mexico hospital for the damages suffered by a client from a hospital-acquired infection.  These cases require a special understanding of medicine.

HAI and medical malpractice

Because HAIs are contracted at a hospital, they are grounds for medical malpractice cases. In order to prove malpractice, a plaintiff must prove that:

  1. The health care provider owed a duty to the patient.
  2. The health care provider deviated from the standard of car.
  3. This deviation was the cause of an injury which caused the patient damages.

As a patient, you trust healthcare providers to treat you responsibly. If you or someone you love have suffered an infection following an operation or a hospital visit and plan to hold the provider accountable you should contact a lawyer to advise you and represent your case.
